Traveling with a dog – how to do it?

Cestování se psem – jak na to?

The scent of distant lands is once again luring pet owners and their furry friends to new places. Are your paws itching too? We bring you tips on what to think about before you set off or how to make your trip more enjoyable.

Holiday in a (dog) hotel

To take him or not to take him? That is the basic question for all owners. If it's at all possible, take your buddy with you on the trip. You'll have experiences that you need to share together! However, if you want to fly, enjoy a holiday somewhere where dogs are not allowed, or you don't want to exhaust a sick or elderly dog, it's better to opt for a stay at a dog hotel.

Today, the range of truly above-standard services for all dog temperaments is developing in our country. You can often pay extra for training, wellness procedures, or a special regime for your pet. In other words, a holiday for them, while you go on holiday elsewhere.

  •             If you decide on a dog hotel, book it long in advance. Usually several months ahead.
  •            It's a good idea to visit the hotel with your dog first, so they get used to it and aren't scared when you leave.

Into the car we go

If together, then best by car. Some furry friends have problems with car travel and vomit, but nowadays there are natural remedies and tricks that can help calm their upset stomachs and nerves. For example, covering the carrier with a blanket helps, so they don't see the flickering landscape. There are also calming scents or music for the car specifically for dogs.

  • If you are afraid and don't know what to do in the car with your partner, don't hesitate to contact an expert who will help you.
  • Travel safely at all times! A comfortable new feature for longer journeys is a dog car seat. Buckled up and snug as a bug in a rug. The Snuggle Nest simply gets it right.

Car seat and passport

First and foremost, think about safety! The dog must always be restrained in the car or in a separate space in the boot, so that in the event of an accident, it does not fly around. Whether you are travelling in a car seat or kennel. Always choose a harness for the car, which will not cause such serious injuries as a collar if the seatbelt jerks.

What to take with you when travelling?

It's worth making a list so you don't forget anything.

  • A valid vaccination certificate, or a pet passport for international travel.
  • Check for valid deworming and defleaing. For southern countries, consult your veterinarian against heartworms.
  • Disinfectant, healing ointment, activated charcoal, or another effective remedy for digestive upset.
  • Travel water bottle
  • Tick tweezers (the shorter the attachment time, the lower the risk of infection, e.g. with babesiosis)
  • A travel bowl might also come in handy.
  • Treats, food

What to practice before your holiday

Beforehand, remember that your dog should be able to be alone in the hotel room. You can make it easier for them with a licking mat, a puzzle toy, a blanket with the scent of their beloved owner, or by setting up a crate where they will feel safe and cozy like in their own room (and there's no risk of them chewing up anything in the hotel).

You can practice "alone time" before your holiday at friends' houses. If you know it might be a problem, prepare a backup plan in advance, someone who will always be able to stay with the dog if you go somewhere dogs are not allowed.

At the sea, like at home

We think that every dog should see the sea at least once in their life! That fresh air and frolicking waves... Dogs usually love it, if you find a dog-friendly beach and aren't immediately kicked out. Just be careful not to let them drink too much salty water (diarrhoea) and to always give them a freshwater shower after a good swim in the sea, so that their coat doesn't suffer from the salt.

Then all that's left is to enjoy your time together and unforgettable moments faithfully side by side!

And where are you going on holiday this year? Are you taking your furry friend with you? And what do you always make sure to pack? Share with us at info@groomo.cz, we'd love to gather the scent of distant lands.
